This term for Rich Task the year eights topic was keeping ourselves safe, every class was given a different form of safety e.g. travel safety, and at the end of term we had to do a performance, our class got street safety and we came up with a bunch of great skits that portrayed keeping ourselves safe really well, putting the skits together was really hectic, but in the end we did a wonderful performance and were proud of what we had done

Congratulations to our amazing class lit quiz team consisting of Harper, Rosie, Daniel, Brooke and Katie for winning the balmoral school lit quiz, and getting the entire hunger games trilogy for our class which we are reading at the moment.

The lit quiz was a 40 question quiz with 4 rounds of 10 questions, the theme for the lit quiz was the hunger games and each table was assigned a district, our class got district six which are medicine and at first we were disappointed because we wanted the cool districts, but we ended up having a really cool outfit and a intresting table covered in test tubes, pill bottles, beakers and loads of Tic-tacs

the questions were based on lots of well knowen books such as CHERUB, Harry Potter and of course the hunger games!!!!. Our team was challenged by many of the questions but always managed to find an answer and in the end we got 37 questions right out of 40 only beating room 3 by .5 points to come in a well earned first place.

well done to Harper who has been selected to compete in the Maggi food showdown along with fellow year eight students Dylan, Yusi and Jess. The Maggi food showdown is a competition in which intermediate students compete in, you can use at least two Maggi ingrediants and with these ingrediants you have to make a main meal that can serve two adults and two children, Harper, Dylan, Yusi and Jess are in the regionals and will compete with all the other schools that made it to the upper north island competition later on this term, if they win they will go on to compete in the nationals and will star on the Erin Simpson show!!!.

Room 31's list of successes is already a mile long with 5 out of 8 house captains 1 student leader and some great sporting achievements but our goal for term 2 is to make it longer.

Some of the Room 31 awesome Camp reviews ENJOY!

Personal camp review By Daniel

I found snorkeling a fun and challenging task. When I first dipped my head underwater I couldn’t force myself to breathe. It kept filling up and choking me as if it were alive, and everybody else was really far ahead. Eventually I solved my little problem by breathing fast above surface, ducking under quick and to continue breathing. After that I had so much fun. I was pleased and proud for accomplishing my task and swam triumphantly to find my friends. A little while later harper told me to hold my breath and dive down. I was timid at first but then I built up my courage and did it. WOW. I thought I was close to the beautiful rainbow of fish before but now I was…even closer. Wow.

Another challenge I faced was getting sleep and organization in our tent. At the end of camp our tent consisted of grass, grass, grass. On the first night sleep just wouldn’t come. It was like it had decided to pack up and go on holiday. It was so annoying. In the end I just closed my eyes and silently vowed to myself that I couldn’t open them until morning. It worked. It took a long time but it worked. The second night was a whole lot easier. Sleep came fast. I think it was probably because I was so tired. On the third night I changed tents and slept with friends as I would have had the beach sleep not been cancelled. I had a great personal time and experience at camp. It was amazing.

Camp By Stella

When I was going biking I was a little nervous at the start because I thought I might fall or hurt myself. Once I got going I realized I was fine and I went over all the ramps and did some faster biking on the road when we went out with James.
Living with four other people in a small place like a tent always causes some problems or arguments. I tried my hardest to stay out of the arguments. When we weren’t arguing, which was most of the time we were having loads of fun outside on the grass. It was great!!!
I was worried the rain would ruin camp but it was quite enjoyable at times. Our tent stayed standing and we didn’t get wet at all.
I loved horse riding and snorkeling, because I felt safe the whole time in both activities. Since I was the only person thatknew how to ride well I could help my friends and show them how to make their horse stop and go.
Snorkeling was really fun, I loved watching the fish swim past you and we saw loads of different types, which we learned about at the AV show afterward.
I loved camp and had a great time at Pakiri.

Personal Review of Challenges at Camp By Jack Rm 31

As I staggered across the soft white sand and into the crystal blue water, I put on the rest of my snorkeling gear. The mask felt eve so tight sucking into my delicate skin. I was ready to go snorkeling having put on wetsuit and other gear. My group was already waddling into the water so I raced down to join them. The water just felt so cool and refreshing. Soon I followed the others into the magnificent underwater world I see before me. Popping my head underwater I spotted a striped fish swimming about. Suddenly water rushes through my pipe and enters my mouth. Paddling up to the surface, I spat out the salty water. Feeling my energy being sapped from my body I turned around and head for shore. Pushing myself onwards towards the beach, using all the strength left in my body. Finally making it out of the water feeling the silky sand underneath my feet. Puffing, I stumbled up to my bag and took a big drink of water.

“Pitter Patter” “Pitter Patter”. I hear the faint drips of rain splattering down on the roof of my tent. Today’s activities were over, so I decided to rest in my tent. “Pitter Patter” “Pitter Patter” Pitter Patter”. Soon the rain got harder until everyone including my own group were forced to take refuge inside their soaking wet tents. “Is this what it’s going to be like every day,” I thought. Tired, I fell asleep on my sleeping bag.

Camp Snorkle By Katie

I Shuddered as the icy cold water hit my skin, leaking through my wetsuit. The instructor in front of me went on unperturbed, diving under water to collect shells to show us all. All i could think of was seaweed, cold, water in my snorkel, SEAWEED!!! my hatred/fear of seaweed was brought to life. Fourtunately/unfortuately for me you can't scream into a snorkel as i was trying to do with each kelp forest.
Towards the end of our snorkel my hands and feet went numb from the cold, i forgot about the little fish cruising nearby and focused on not freezing to death. When the water released its grasp on me and i was returned to the land the temperature did not improve. 20 minutes later my toes were still without feeling and i was still shivering - note to self: bring LOTS of warm clothing next time
